Unlike other civic society’s TCS prepares its own proposals for discussion with the local authority, stakeholders and the wider public. One such example of this is our proposals for the former Beales department store.

TCS proposal for a new covered market and public plaza

Over the years there have been many proposals for the re-development of the site none of which have ever come to fruition.

EAT, DRINK, SHOP

Our proposal is that the current vacant Beales store is re-purposed into a covered market with multi-purpose central space and at the rear mezzanine a co-worker space. Within the covered market there could be record stalls, book stalls, cloths, fruit, cafes etc. all small, all unique. If they grow they might take a vacant unit in the town! Vitality and passion go on to create new businesses, but you need energy and vision. The car park between Sainsbury and the High Street is easy to make part of it into a usable public plaza for temporary smaller markets like the farmers market and to create a new civic space at the heart of Tonbridge!.
