Civic Society Design Awards
The Tonbridge Civic Society is delighted to announce the winners of this year’s Design Awards, celebrated at its annual summer tea party. The awards recognize outstanding contributions to the town's architectural and community landscape.
The Design Commendation was awarded to Mark Richards of The Market House, a project that transformed the former Natwest bank at the centre of town into a café bar. The Society’s judging panel was impressed by the care and attention brought to the preservation of many original features.
Winning a Community Award was James Pavlou, of Walk Tonbridge, who has done so much in recent years to promote exploring the town, including the annual Walk Tonbridge Festival. "James's enthusiasm for getting outside and exploring, understanding how this place came to be, and providing a way for others to do the same is truly commendable," said Tom Freke, Civic Society chair.
Another recipient of the Community Award was Tonbridge & Malling Leisure Trust, represented by Kirsty Brimsted, together with Matt Boughton, leader of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, for their work to refurbish the spa facilities at Tonbridge Swimming Pool.
TMBC, together with Bauer Media Outdoor’s Adam Johnson, also won the newly introduced Street Scene Award, for the Living Roof Bus Shelter at Quarry Hill. This award category allows the Society to acknowledge smaller initiatives that enhance the town's quality of life. "The addition of the living roof is a great idea and, while in itself is a small step, it indicates how nature can be brought into our towns, as well as improving how things look.
